Threshold Ideation

02.04.19

After drawing up my plan and several threshold drawings I have come up with 3 main concepts to explore further.

I have come up with the idea of creating a new entrance way. I am thinking of making a new opening from the foyer (WB232) to the left hand side of the original doors into the gallery space. This would require the existing windows to be removed and replaced and the existing doorway to be covered up with a new wall. With the new entrance of I am potentially thinking of a sliding door system or some kind of fold up, shutter door. Both of these would allow ease of movement and it would allow there to be an extension of the gallery space if needed out into the foyer. This would be exploring the threshold of movement/stasis.

The following diagram is how I plan to show this idea in relation to my floor plan.

Another concept I came up with is to again create a new entrance way but this time at the south end of the gallery. This new door would include glass which will allow more light into a once dark space. This door will function on a single central access, meaning that when open it would create two openings either side, putting further emphasis on the light and shadows it would create. Also the way in which the door operates suggest a certain movement, one that invites you into the space in a fun new interactive way. The idea of a door is to open and close off space, why not make the experience of this exciting rather than your conventional door.

My third and final threshold concept is to incorporate a translucent element into the gallery. My thinking behind this idea is to make a section of the facade and or interior wall out of a series of glass panels with coloured tint. This would allow light to filter into the space in a complete different way than that of a traditional window. I am also wanting to incorporate some sort of hanging fabrics/curtains within the gallery, this would create and show movement throughout the space. This would also create a maze like atmosphere inside the gallery, similar to the tunnel system of the adjacent Albert Park.

I am still unsure of the location of this potential intervention, however I would like to make it visible from the street and to the general public. So this suggest having it on either the northern or eastern facade. I am all about the idea of activating the street and having an element to the gallery that would entice and intrigue the public could draw more attention to the Gallery space itself.

In regards to the threshold moments and relating the idea back to the overall site and its surroundings I am wanting this idea to capture Albert Park and its “hidden secrets”as such. The main threshold moments I am wanting to focus on are the movement and perspective through and of the gallery space, Also incorporating elements of light/dark with the use of translucent materials.
