What is it ?
This is an unconventional accommodation arrangement intended for use by two strangers who are comfortable with sharing intimate moments with one another. Allowing freedom of choice.
What does it do?
Provides several different spaces for sleep work or play, allowing one to make their own decisions based on their particular desire at the time.
Object
As the intervention has no specified areas apart from the kitchen/bathroom the use of the invention is flexible. Being flexible relates back to the notion of movement which is the overarching theme/inspiration for this project
For project 3 of our design studio sleep/ wake studies, we were tasked with designing a space for two strangers. The project requires us to design some sort of unconventional accommodation for two strangers. Our proposal is to sit within the existing gallery building and must also take into account everyday rituals such as cooking, cleaning and changing. Considering that this studio paper is split into 3 parts I wanted to pick up from where I left off in project 2. In doing so I have focused again on the main thresholds of Movement/Stasis and Transparency/Opaque. My goal with this sleeping platform intervention is to create some sense of intimacy between the two strangers occupying the space. I wanted it to feel like a new world when entered, a truly immersive experience that encouraged interaction. In order to do so, I wanted to mirror the platform and place it on the roof. This emphasises the feeling intimacy creating a truly unique space. In regards to addressing the movement of the site, I decided to take on the form of my translucent curtains and develop it further. The main structure consists of a waffle frame allowing curves to be formed, overtop a flexible material is used to seal, somewhat similar to the construction of a wooden skate ramp. The undulating surfaces of the intervention create spaces that can be interpreted in several different ways, this means that based on ones desire it can be used for difficult activities, whether it be working resting or sleeping.
