After doing my both my site and section plan on the brown paper I decided to try and digitalise them. My thinking behind this was that I would be able to photoshop render them and use is for my final presentation.
However this didn’t exactly turn out how I expected so I decided to stick with what I already had.
This is my final Site and section plan. I decided against using my butter paper layers as this look much more visually appealing. The arrows in the site plan are to suggest movement.
I have collected some images of various different section plans that I would like to try and take inspiration from.
A section plan is a vertical slice drawing that shows the internal features of a building. The section plan allows viewers to see inside a building and get a different perspective. they can be very affective in portraying particular design elements.
There are many different styles of section plans, both hand drawn and digital. I particularly am drawn to the photoshop rendered method and plan to implement this in both my final section and floor plan.
After drawing up my plan and several threshold drawings I have come up with 3 main concepts to explore further.
I have come up with the idea of creating a new entrance way. I am thinking of making a new opening from the foyer (WB232) to the left hand side of the original doors into the gallery space. This would require the existing windows to be removed and replaced and the existing doorway to be covered up with a new wall. With the new entrance of I am potentially thinking of a sliding door system or some kind of fold up, shutter door. Both of these would allow ease of movement and it would allow there to be an extension of the gallery space if needed out into the foyer. This would be exploring the threshold of movement/stasis.
The following diagram is how I plan to show this idea in relation to my floor plan.
Another concept I came up with is to again create a new entrance way but this time at the south end of the gallery. This new door would include glass which will allow more light into a once dark space. This door will function on a single central access, meaning that when open it would create two openings either side, putting further emphasis on the light and shadows it would create. Also the way in which the door operates suggest a certain movement, one that invites you into the space in a fun new interactive way. The idea of a door is to open and close off space, why not make the experience of this exciting rather than your conventional door.
The following diagram is how I plan to show this idea in relation to my floor plan.
My third and final threshold concept is to incorporate a translucent element into the gallery. My thinking behind this idea is to make a section of the facade and or interior wall out of a series of glass panels with coloured tint. This would allow light to filter into the space in a complete different way than that of a traditional window. I am also wanting to incorporate some sort of hanging fabrics/curtains within the gallery, this would create and show movement throughout the space. This would also create a maze like atmosphere inside the gallery, similar to the tunnel system of the adjacent Albert Park.
I am still unsure of the location of this potential intervention, however I would like to make it visible from the street and to the general public. So this suggest having it on either the northern or eastern facade. I am all about the idea of activating the street and having an element to the gallery that would entice and intrigue the public could draw more attention to the Gallery space itself.
In regards to the threshold moments and relating the idea back to the overall site and its surroundings I am wanting this idea to capture Albert Park and its “hidden secrets”as such. The main threshold moments I am wanting to focus on are the movement and perspective through and of the gallery space, Also incorporating elements of light/dark with the use of translucent materials.
The following diagram is how I plan to show this idea in relation to my floor plan.
During my studies I stumbled upon several projects that I admire. I aim to channel these into my own project as inspiration and guidance.
In regards to looking at the threshold of Movement and fluidity I came across this particularly striking building designed by local New Zealand architecture firm Pattersons. The building in question also happens to be an art gallery.
THE LEN LYE CENTRE
Located in New Plymouth
I really enjoy the fluid motion that this facade encapsulates. It almost looks like a series of waves breaking out at sea. The use of the reflective material also gives it this second dimension. There is also a great sense of movement, this is something that I am trying capture and I definitely plan on using this as a very important inspiration.
I have this idea to somehow incorporate translucent curtains into the gallery space in order to guide people through the space, this design will massively help in achieving this.
“Mata Aho Collective is a collaboration between four Māori women who produce large scale fiber based works, commenting on the complexity of Māori lives.” I really admire the projects that this collective creates. Majority of their work is textile related but I feel like it can still be relevant in regards to this spatial project.
A personal favourite of mine is KAOKAO (2014) This is a large scale light installation. The piece resembles a large kite and allows light to pass through creating symmetrical shadows on either side
Today we got the chance to visit the gallery space in which we will be incorporating our threshold moment. The gallery is located on the first floor of the WB building on Wellsley St East.
The gallery itself has been modified to allow for more surface area to hand and display artworks. It consists of a single entrance into the main area, the space is quite long a narrow and is separated by a false wall. This wall creates a darker space for projection at the rear of the gallery.
In order for us to showcase our threshold moment, we are required to create a model. This means that in order to make it to scale we had to take measurements of the gallery. Everything from wall height to window frames.
We were given a base floorpan for reference, I ended up writing down all my measurements on it.
Take photos and do some illustrations of Albert Park and the surrounding areas, both on the way and towards the galley space.
The main threshold I would like to focus on is lightness to darkness, so i’m thinking of using several different shades of paper so for example, A5 cream, white, brown, dark brown and black.
I also want to somehow incorporate tracing or butter paper, this will allow for a second dimension to my drawings and when done correctly can be very effective.
Possibly print out flora and fauna onto tracing paper as well.
