After completing my A2 I went on to thinking about my model. I wanted to make sure there was a clear correlation between my A2 and my final model. I came up with the idea of using the repetition of the falling figure to influence the form and shape of my model.
My second attempt at my A2 drawing was much more successful! I made sure to keep it simple a clean and kept in mind my main areas of focus; which are Dream/Reality, Movement/Stasis and Weight/Weightlessness.
I actually made the mistake of doing this on an A3 piece of paper so I had to take my finished drawing and scan it my email and get it printed out in the larger A2 format.
So upon reflection and from talking to my fellow classmates I made the decision to redo my A2 drawing. The first attempt wasn’t exactly what I was hoping. There was no actual meaning behind it, instead it just looked like a bunch of images collaged together.
So in an attempt to redo it I came up with this rough plan below…
It still follows the same overall idea of exploring someone falling into a dream. I just wanted to make it clear and make sure that it a real meaning unlike my previous A2.
After our modelling workshop I went away and attempted to make some larger scale ones. (below is what I came up with)
This was my first attempt at making models on a larger scale. I used black and white foam board. I cut incisions in the board, folding a long the cut line. This allowed me to fold the foam board and create the models you see above.
All of these models are very much so in the Solid/Dark area of the spectrum. This is interesting because the whole idea of my A2 drawing is about falling into a dream state. Darkness is definitely something that I would associate with dreaming however solidity is not. I see dreaming as a much more fluid motion and these models do not represent that. This excise has allowed me to notice this and I will have to revisit this.
My plan/idea for my new model is to focus more so on the meaning behind the model rather than what it looks like aesthetically. I seem to get caught up in the final outcome rather than process of getting there. This is defiantly one of my downfalls and something I need to work on. I need to make sure that what I make has meaning and further explores the idea of falling into a dream state.
I plan to work with similar materials but in attempt to add more fluidity to the model I want to make use of materials such as tracing paper and translucent plastic. This will add another element to the model further helping to portray the message.
My idea is to make the model look like it’s on the verge of falling over. I will achieve this by having slopping diagonal sides. I also want to create coloured light throughout the model – I hope the use of cellophane will achieve this. This will also be very powerful in photographs.
Hopefully I manage to capture this idea in my model…. I guess we’ll find out in my next post!
For todays lesson we were asked to bring a collection of different materials for model making. These materials were supposed to relate to our A2 drawing of sleep/wake.
Materials:
Foam board
Cardboard
Wire
Tracing Paper
Butter paper
Black card
Polystyrene
Translucent Plastic
Using these materials we were asked to come up with 4 hand sized conceptual models. We were the asked to place them on a vertical axis based on how Interior or Exterior they felt. (Below)
Next we were asked to create two more models. This time we had to arrange the models according to the categories of Light and Darkness. (Below is my outcome)
The final stage was to create another 2 more models. this time we were to rate them on both an X and Y axis. Y staying as Light and Darkness and X being Fluidity and Solidity. This provided a wide spectrum to place my models, this is shown below.
7:30am – Is where it all begins… well at least it’s supposed to!
This is the time I have my alarm set to. I wake up every morning to the sound of a computerised jingle. However I usually end up tapping snooze just for a couple more precious minutes.
7:40am – Around about now my alarm pipes up again, only for me to once again tap snooze.
7:50am – The alarm goes off for one last time and I finally admit to myself that I have to get up.
I lay there in bed and I can hear the wiring noise of the elevators in my building during the morning rush.
I hear the noise pollution of the city creep in through my window
And I see the light cascading down the wall,
8:00am – After all of this I finally decide to start my day at around 8:00
Today we started to think about and conceptualise our A2 Drawing. I came up with 5 main ideas to focus on
Fluidity
Dreaming / Dream State
Vertical
Light
Weightlessness
I wanted to explore the idea of falling to sleep. Why do we say ‘falling’ to sleep? Do we actually physically fall or is it more of a drift? When I think of falling I think of a vertical movement. As apposed to drifting, which seems more horizontal – e.g drifting off to sea.
I want my A2 drawing to explain the feeling of falling beyond my physical being, and entering the mind of my subconscious. I think that the use of light will be effective in achieving this. The mind becomes darker as you descend into dream and portraying this in the right way could be very powerful.
I created this mood-board based on the aesthetic that I am trying to achieve
Today we were introduced to the concept of sleep wake. The phase of transition between being asleep and waking up. The whole project focus is based on the idea of the threshold between the two different worlds.
We were asked to do a series of blind drawings, in which we had to interpret our idea of this concept. (Below are my drawings)
top image is upside down by the way…
After completing our drawings were asked to add to our work via annotations. Specifically words that explain or suggest movement. E.g: Flow, Movement, Tension and Mindfulness.
At first, I have to admit that I wasn’t quite sure why were were doing this but upon reflection I now understand it’s purpose.
